Having initially graduated as an industrial chemist, spent 17 years working for Occidental Petroleum in metal finishing and engineering. The best part of seven years were spent in the then Soviet Union, and two years living in California.
On returning to the UK, spent a couple of disastrous years as an insurance salesman, then joined a US engineering company in London as a Proposals Coordinator, basically transforming English written by engineers into English that might be better understood by the potential clients.
I was head-hunted to Zurich to do a similar thing for a Swiss-German company, but this time in German and Russian! This was a somewhat fraught period.
Returning to the UK once more, I helped my wife in her translation business, by being her tame (and usually unpaid) proofreader. After a few years, I was persuaded to get back into computer programming - I had done some in both London and Zurich. I still do a little of this, but am seeking more serious work as a proofreader - I am sure it is less stressful than dealing with computer code!
