simple webapp inside Joomla

I want to make a simple "hello world" type app in Joomla. It will have two pages
1. custom profile page for currently logged in user, basically a form with some textboxes and checkboxes he can fill out
2. page showing profile summary text (based on what was input to the custom profile) for first N users
Form input should be done via POST using appropriate Joomla functions. Database access should be also via internal Joomla functions, not direct php.
Both these pages will need to be accessible from the Joomla menu system. I am not sure which Joomla theme would be optimal for creating this sort of webapps, so I hope to get pro advice input from you.
I am aware that this specific task might be solvable using existing Joomla components. I am asking for custom written code to keep it as simple and "hello world" as possible, so that I would get to understand how to make much more elaborate webapps running in the main content area of Joomla.
After learning how to deploy my own code inside Joomla in this project, I also hope to continue working with the coder on other training projects to get more exposure to existing Joomla components and functionalities.
