set amazon server for nodeJS

I have an AWS microinstance running amazon linux,
node js was installed, but I get an error for using NPM
so I need to have the server working fine for nodeJS apps, NPM working and all basics working for multiple apps on the server,
I also need 2 apps with hello world on the server, to check all is working fine for multiple projects, this 2 projects should be of course accesible via the internet.
Please provide examples of experience with nodeJS web sites thanks!
