Virtual Printer to Digital Signage

Creation of application to allow a computer to emulate a printer.

Remote network computer will be able to print as if printing to a physical printer. Remote computer utilizes drivers for HP Business Inkjet 1100. It is not possible to make any changes to the driver or any other settings on the remote computer.

Host computer will receive "printed" information from remote computer. It will then display information on monitor (full screen) and will be able to automatically print the information to a printer connected to host computer (local or network).

A little background....

This would be utilized in a fire station.

Currently when the station is dispatched to a call the dispatcher utilizes computer aided dispatch software to automatically print (via internet connection) a document with call information to a printer located in the fire station. We would like to have that information automatically displayed on several screens in a easy to read format as well as printed.

More detailed requirements....

1.1 Operating Environment
Application must be capable of running in a Windows XP or Windows 7 operating system.
1.2 Dependencies
Remote computer that will print to this application may not be modified in any manner. We do not have access to that computer in any way or fashion. Remote computer prints to our static ip address and we utilize port forwarding to transfer that print job to printer on our network. This application will “replace” that printer.
2. System Features
2.1 Virtual Printer
3.1.1 Receive Print Job
Remote computer will send print job to our network. This application will appear to be a HP Business Inkjet 1100 Printer to remote computer and will receive the print job. Upon receiving print job, application will play an audio message that can be pre-selected from host computer files utilizing application UI.
3.1.2 Stimulus/Response Sequences
Application will carry out function with no human intervention.

2.2 Digital Signage
3.2.1 Display Text
Application will take all text from the document sent by remote computer and display that text on the computer monitor in full screen in an easy to read fashion (aka digital signage).
3.2.2 Stimulus/Response Sequences
Application will carry out function with no human intervention.
3.2.3 Requirements
While in full screen display mode, no other applications or controls will appear. Full screen display will have header with text “Dispatch Information” and document text below. Application must include ability to change text font and size a UI. Full screen display must be suitable for display on large monitor as digital signage. Any images received as part of print document will not be displayed.

2.3 Print
3.2.1 Print Document
Application must pass original document to printer connected to host computer via internal network.
3.2.2 Stimulus/Response Sequences
Application will carry out function with no human intervention. Must occur within 10 seconds of full screen display.
3.2.3 Requirements
Application will receive document from remote computer and pass that document to a computer on internal network for printing. Document must appear that same as original document.

2.4 Email
3.2.1 Email Text
Application must be able to email text to list of email address that may be set from application UI.
3.2.2 Stimulus/Response Sequences
Application will carry out function with no human intervention. Must occur within 60 seconds of full screen display.
3.2.3 Requirements
Text emailed will be identical to text displayed on full screen monitor. Application will provide means to provide email host/server information via a UI. Application must provide means to provide destination email addresses via a UI. Must be able to send to up to fifty email addresses.
