The project is a progressive web application that is aimed to engage the public in increasing civic engagement, as well as more active in Canada through three main principles:
Accountability: The progressive web application will engage the user by asking them about their daily/long-term interests (e.g. Climate change, healthcare, public transport) from the drop down menu in their sign up page, as well as their residential address. From this information we will provide the user an interactive format where they will learn who their Federal member of parliament (MP) is, and what their voting record is based on the interests picked in the sign up page.
Using data from the Government of Canada’s open data API will need to be done in order to achieve this.
Transparency: From the data presented in the User’s dashboard they will be able to interact with the bills passed concerning their interests and the MP’s track record/history with the topic at hand, including their platform. They will also see all the donations made to their campaigns from elections Canada.
Engagement & Participation: Through the data collected on the progressive web application itself, the stakeholder hopes to collect enough data to know the most common interests and concerns of the public is, and through the application suggest townhalls/meetups/events where users can meet other alike who share their concerns and engage their representatives.
Data analysis/visualization is needed on the backend of this to be accomplished.
