Simple Machines Forum Messaging System Fix

I currently run a forum using the Simple Machines Forum script. People are having issues getting their messages because the message icon doesn't always show up. I think that the problem is theme related but I have no clue how to fix it. If you navigate to the PM area, the Message icon will reappear in the menu bar and then stay there until you clear your cookies. I need this fixed to where the Message icon always appears.
