When shooting portraits, such as fashions shots, photographers often position the model in front of a solid white wall or fabric. Bright lighting minimizes shadows on the face and creates a soft transition between the figure and the background. One problem that can crop up in photos like these is that sometimes the skin tones can look washed out.

Certain lighting conditions can give skin tones a harsh, unnatural look. Flash lighting is the most common cause, followed by late afternoon direct sunlight. The result is often an uncomfortably strong orange, yellow, magenta, or red look to skin in an otherwise well balanced.

The key to balancing out an uneven skin tone is finding a way of targeting problem areas without affecting the rest of the skin. Two different camera angles of the same person and when we go to edit it we realize that the flesh tones do not match. Photos have taken on a rather sickly shade of green, red, or some other non-flesh-colored tone. To rectify that problem

Flesh Match

A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it.

The traditional use for a shadow is to simulate 3D depth in a 2D image. This is done by creating an offset shadow behind an object to indicate that the object is hovering above the background in 3D space.

Shadows are caused by the obstruction of a light beam by an object. They occur when a light beam hits an object and reflects off, thus preventing it from passing through the object to the other side. A shadow is the dark side of an object that falls away from the direct sun rays.

Sometimes objects are able to block light. An object from which no light can pass through is called opaque. An example is our body. Since light cannot pass through it creates a dark area around the object. So this patch where the light cannot reach is called a shadow. Opaque objects create clear dark shadows.

A composite Image is a picture that is made from the combination of multiple images merged into a single surface. One of the main advantages to Adobe Photoshop is its ability to overlay multiple images onto a single surface to create a composite. Designers often employ the technique when placing incongruous images in the same environment to create a surreal effect. Composites can also be made from different versions of the same photograph. For example, if you have two shots of the same landscape at the same angle, but at different times of day, you can make a composite to blend the two together, highlighting your favorite aspects of each.
