NASA Challenge: Design a Logo for Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) Project
- Status: Closed
- Prize: $200
- Entries Received: 128
- Winner: oldestsebi
Contest Brief
The world’s leading space agencies have agreed that future spacecraft will communicate with Earth and among themselves using a new Solar System Internet (SSI) based on Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN) technology. The DTN project is developing a protocol suite that extends the terrestrial Internet capabilities into highly stressed data communication environments where the conventional Internet does not work well. These environments are typically subject to frequent disruptions, unidirectional links, long delays and high error rates. The DTN architecture is described in RFC 4838.
Some of the benefits of DTN Technology include:
• Improved Operations and Situational Awareness: The DTN store-and-forward mechanism along with automatic retransmission provides more insight into events during communication outages and significantly reduces the need for ground-based scheduling.
• Interoperability and Reuse: A standardized DTN protocol suite enables interoperability of multi-agency communication assets and also allows NASA to use the same communication stack for future missions (Low-Earth, Near-Earth or Deep Space).
• Space Link Efficiency, Utilization and Robustness: DTN enables more reliable and efficient data transmissions resulting in more usable bandwidth. DTN also improves link reliability by having multiple network paths and assets for potential communication hops.
• Security: The DTN Bundle Security Protocol (BSP) allows for integrity checks, authentication and encryption, even on links where not previously used.
• Quality of Service: The DTN protocol suite allows for many priority levels to be set for different data types, ensuring that the most important data is received ahead of less important data.
The DTN project is looking for a logo identifies with DTN technology. Some terms to consider that may help with the design include: Delay/Disruption Tolerant Communication and Networking, Solar System Internet, Deep Space Network, Reliable Communications, Secure Communications, Automatic Store-and-Forward, Network Management, Optical Communication, Quality-of-Service
Submission Criteria and Deliverables:
o Adrian Hooke, who passed away in 2013, was instrumental to the DTN project, serving in major technical leadership and project management roles for DTN. To honor his contributions to DTN, we would like his name or initials somehow embedded in the logo. As part of the submission, please describe how this is done.
o Having multiple versions of the logo is desired. All version should say DTN, but some may also spell out Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networking.
o Logo must be 4 colors or less of your choice and you may include black and white as well. Please stay away from gradients, as they will not be able to be easily reproduced across all media.
o You must show your logo on a white and black background. You must also identify your colors.
o Source File Requirements: All original vector source files of the submitted design. Files should be created in Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape and saved as layered AI or EPS files. Note that PSDs saved as EPS files are not true vector / scalable files and will not be accepted. All non-standard Windows/Apple fonts must be listed in a text file within your Submission Zip file. Include the name of the font and a link to where it can be downloaded/purchased. DO NOT include any font files in your submission or source files.
o Preview Image Requirements: Please create your logo preview image as one (1) 1024x1024 JPG or PNG file in RGB color mode at 72dpi. Show your logo on BOTH a black and white background.
o Stock Imagery Requirements: Stock imagery is not allowed in this contest. All submitted elements must be designed solely by you.

I wish I was able to produce a simpler design than my original idea, but best of luck to the contestants. Hope NASA found the logo they were looking for....will the winning design be revealed after awarding the contestant the prize?

Dear NTL (NASA) - Programmer / Analyst / Tester / Reviewer / Supervisor / Manager,
Since all of my last 5 entries [Entry #87 -Entry #91] were rejected by NTL, I would like to know more about the story of DTN which I should represent in Logo. Thanks
