NASA Challenge: Develop 3D Models for Robonaut Simulation-EVA Grapple Hook
- Status: Closed
- Prize: $50
- Entries Received: 22
- Winner: rapthor
Contest Brief
We (NASA) need to develop a number of high resolution 3D models to be used for Robonaut simulations. These 3D models are to be developed based on photographs of real items (see attached files). These simulated objects would be used for various grasp and manipulator testing.
This particular challenge is to build a 3D model of an Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA or spacewalk) Grapple hook. Astronauts use this grapple hook to tether themselves to structure (e.g. EVA Handrails) while performing extra-vehicular tasks. The design of the grapple hook prevents accidental release of grappled objects, which ensures the safety of astronauts.
Note that tether material is flexible and thus flexes in the photographs.
There is a scale in the attached imagery is in inches. All final model submissions must be delivered in on of the following formats: .prt (Solidworks, ProE); .step or .stp; .iges; .stl; .dae. NOTE: Freelancer submissions will need to be image file views of your model. If you win the contest, you will then send/transfer the model files to NASA via email, dropbox, etc.
All entries will be judged on the accuracy, quality, and fidelity (detail) of the model produced. Note that where highly similar top submissions are produced, the submission entered first will win.

Employer Feedback
“Rapthor did an outstanding job of creating a very detailed 3D model of a EVA grapple hook for use in our NASA robonaut simulation. This was a contest and Rapthor\'s design won over multiple entries.”

Does the strap needs to be modeled as well, or just the hook, I mean the solid part?

How thick is the rail that this hook will be attached to? Can I make the hook smaller than the one on the pictures? Can the hook have a different locking mechanism or should I simply submit a new look to the shape of the hook?

The goal of this challenge is to replicate the hardware in the photos as closely as possible. Hopefully that answers you questions.

Interesting patent. Congratulations. Not sure that it really applies here... I'm not sure I understand your question either.

Must the model be a full, working assembly, or just a single-part object. I understand the tether is included.

Single part object is fine.

I'm not sure what you are asking. Submissions should be make by uploading images (views) of your 3D model. If you win, we will work out transfer of the model files.

Hello. Just a quick question...in the brief when you state "submissions will need to be image file views of your model" are you referring to .JPG, .BMP etc? A true "picture" or rendered image of the model?
-
Contest Holder - 8 years ago
Correct. For your protection, we just need images of your model as a submission. If you are selected as the winner, then we will work with you to transfer the actual model files. Good luck!

Although, I'll have to admit can sufficient details be provided other than just pictures of the objects required to create a 3D model from ? Thank You!

Sorry, we really want to see what people can accomplish with just these photographs. I suppose you could google images of EVA tethers if you are looking for more information about the hardware. :)
