Contest Brief

Growing Green Communities (growing-green-communities.com) is a building (house) envelope materials producer (we make bricks and panels for the walls of housings and buildings). We have 2 main products (bricks and panels) but our bricks are the focus for the time being.

To start, I need a website design.

Once I have a design I like, I will select a winner of this competition who will get the contract for doing the remainder of the work base on their design and their quoted price.

To be clear, this first phase is just for a design and is a fixed price of $250 Cdn. The winner of the competition will be determined base on the quality of the design (flow, images, layout, etc.) and what you quote for the price to complete the site.

I have additional steps in mind for the future including a specialized ordering tool but those will be part of future projects.

We already have a logo (see our website, higher resolution available if required).

Our target audience is both end consumers (people wanting a home built) and companies that build homes.

If you're going to use a CMS then I don't want it super complicated to make changes to the template. I can code in HTML/PHP/MySQL in my sleep (I've been doing it for 25 years) but I don't want to have to figure out the internals of a CMS. In fact, long before CMSs were common I started using page_top.inc and page_bot.inc files so I could change the site design in 1 place and update the entire site. (I'm not suggesting you have to use that method, just giving an example of my personal experience)

Other than a page for the description of the product (including eventually documentation about the product) I'll need a home page, an about us page, contact us page, and galleries that will be implemented over time for both of our products and that will include both videos and pictures.

I don't currently have a lot of photos for you to work with so use public domain/open source images.

As mentioned, the initial design is a fixed price competition for $250 Cdn. In your competition submission please include details (including the price) for the entire project. The site should be able to function on any domain so I can test it on one of my domains that isn't active and then move it to the live domain later. You won't be given FTP access to my site so you will need to create it on your own server or take a screen capture for me to see your design and then zip/tar it up to send it to me.

Lastly, if I like your design (or a part of it) but you are not the ultimate winner, my past approach has been to negotiate a price for the use of the part of your design I like and then provide that to the winner to incorporate into their overall design. So there is a potential for 0 - 3 additional amounts that I may pay to contributors.

I am willing to use wordpress (not a huge fan but open) but I'm not willing to have a 1 page website. Each page should be unique. Home page, About Us, Blocks, (eventually) Panels (wall panels, not solar), Gallery (with sub-pages for Block photos, Block videos, Panel Photos, and Panel Videos. (Although we'll start with only 1 gallery page). And of course a Contact Us page. So the challenge will be easy maintenance of the headers & footers when new pages are added (I know how I would do it ... but you need to know how you will do it!)

I mentioned a couple of days ago I would start rejecting submissions that haven't read my comments here ...

So far, there is only 1 submission that has actually submitted a design that reflects what our company does using the bricks we build AND submitted a price for completion of the website.

REMEMBER ... this competition is the first part of a multi-stage process.

I would encourage all competitors to re-read the competition posting. It says (I believe quite clearly) submit your design ALONG WITH the price to complete the project. I've had some people tell me a price over chat ... that doesn't qualify (I can't remember who said what ... it should be a comment on your submission)

Because some people have gotten the impression that our panels are solar panels ... I thought I should post some pictures.

Here are two pictures of a house being built with our panels ... http://growing-green-communities.com/Wall_Panels.jpg

Any submissions from this point forward that don't read this message might as well withdraw their submission ... because in all likelihood ... you're not going to win.

Part of the purpose of this competition is for me to learn if you can follow my instructions and understand what I'm trying to communicate. If you can't ... then we've got a fundamental problem right from the start ... and we will not likely be working together.

Just a reminder to all ....

Our company produces the blocks shown in the comment I made previously (7 or 8 hours before this comment).

    We don't ---

    * Rent homes (or suites in a hotel)
    * Sell homes (except in a few rare cases)
    * We aren't a beauty salon

I'm not sure where many of you are getting these impressions ... but most of the submissions had focused on concepts like these. If you have specific questions about what we do ... ask them here.

We manufacture and sell blocks to home builders ... our blocks are 4' by 1' by 10" ... so they're not tiny paving stones ... and we're not trying to sell manufacturing plants to anyone.

Hello There! I am extremely interested in your project and I will participate in the contest, but I have an initial question: Do you want me to submit only the design of the homepage in the entry, or do you want all the pages you mentioned?

The design of the homepage is key (obviously) but if sub-pages have a significantly different look (less graphics, a different header, etc.) then you should include that as well.

Wow ... that's a really broad ask! I like a lot of different websites (I've been doing websites for 25+ years) ... and my concern is if I point you in one direction then a creative idea you have might never be shown to me. I would say, take a look at my logo and use that for inspiration ... while always remember to keep clicks to a minimum and keep it responsive ...
There was one submission on this contest that caught my attention ... but it's not fair to that person if I share that idea ... and again it reduces your creativeness.

Oh, and one more thing ... my blocks are 4' x 1' x 10" ... not 8" x 3" x 2" as some have assumed when they hear the term brick. See my post above to see an example

Please do not request to chat simply to ask me to award you the contract.

The winner will be someone who provides me with a design and price ...

All entries are confidential so nobody except me will see your price or design.
