NASA Contest: Create One 10-Second Animation for NASA Human Research Program (HRP)

  • Status: Closed
  • Prize: $1500
  • Entries Received: 104
  • Winner: GabrielGoistais

Contest Brief

The goal of this challenge is to demonstrate your animation skills by creating a (~10 to 20-second) animation from the provided fluid shifts storyboards that describes what happens to the human body and mind in space, to the general public without the need of using audio or text in the animation. The winning submission/animator will be assigned a $4000 USD task to create the remaining five animations related to 1,) anthropometry, 2.) balance control, 3) muscles, 4) bones, and 5.) fluid shifts covered in this contest and 6.) a summary of all five animations. Storyboards are provided below and careful reading of the below detailed descriptions is recommended.

Background

The NASA HRP is challenged with communicating the physiological and psychological adaptations that astronauts undergo during spaceflight. Humans were built for Earth. When astronauts travel into space, their bodies and minds adapt to spaceflight in various ways. Trying to communicate these changes, either to the general public or to NASA leadership (many of whom do not have a medical background) is extremely difficult to do with words, charts and figures. Having a video/animation that would visually depict the changes would be of extreme benefit to our program. Although there are numerous adaptations that the human body and mind undergo in space, the five identified are amenable to short animated clips.

Submission Requirements
• A 10-20-second video or animation that describes what happens to the human body and mind in space, specifically fluid shifts, to a non-technical audience; i.e., the general public.
• The animation should be based on the attached storyboards, although editing to achieve the desired 10-20-second length is expected.
• Rewording of the storyboards is acceptable to improve clarity or to better convey key points.
• Departure of storyboard shots is acceptable to improve clarity or to better convey key points.
• Use of the NASA Logo is not permitted.
• The attached file <HRP_WOMAN3Notes_9July2019.docx> is being provided for supplemental information describing the physiological changes for all five animations.
• Submitter, if awarded as winner of this contest, desires and is available to complete the remaining five animations as an assigned task of $4,000 USD.

Encoding:
• Container: MP4 with no edit lists.
• Audio Codec: AAC-LC in stereo or stereo + 5.1 with a sample rate of 96khz or 48khz.
• Video Codec: H.264
• Frame Rate: The same rate the video was captured at.
• Bitrate: no fixed bitrates required.
• Resolution and aspect ratio: 16:9 aspect ratio at your preferred HD resolution.

Evaluation Criteria
• Quality: Does the submission look professional?
• Requirements: Does the submission meet the stated requirements?
• Clarity: Does the submission describe how the fluids shift in the human body in terms understandable by the general public?
• Originality
• Stirs public interest

Please note that NASA employees/contractors are not eligible for competing in this contest.

Like many here I'm very disappointed with the final verdict . But as I suspected there were political considerations and motivations in play hence the big delay in choosing a winner. That said a huge disservice was done to those of us who followed the rules and guidelines. However if there is any consolation this was a POLITICAL decision not one based on quality. Interesting that in the last few hours the winning entry has suddenly been upgraded from 3 stars (which it was for 6 weeks since) to 5 stars. There is no shame here!

May I know why my entry (including entries from two other participants) were not rated before the winner was awarded the project?

Frustrated seeing winning entry. Graphics tracking with the human finger is terrible. Not a professional work at all. Even Animation basics are not there.

We're in the final minutes! Thanks for everyone's interest. This contest has been open for 6 weeks. At this point in time, we're not looking to extend out of respect for the 100+ entries we've gotten so far. If you can, get an example of your work in. After our review if none of the entries meet our criteria, we'll consider extending. Best of luck to you all.

"Zoom into the heart chambers and show the decrease in volume as well as the jugular vein to see the increase in cross-section "
I made some option according to my guess (you can use them to guide me)

Text is allowed, but please see the contest brief: The goal of this challenge is to demonstrate your animation skills by creating a (~10 to 20-second) animation from the provided fluid shifts storyboards that describes what happens to the human body and mind in space, to the general public without the need of using audio or text in the animation.

Hi Client, Thanks for the rating on my first submission! Just checking - was this rating reflective of the entire style of the video or just because of it being incomplete? Written feedback is always appreciated to see whether or not I am on the right track :) Thanks, Kyle.

I would like to know it the veins change it self (like more thick or thin on space) or all alterations is only inside veins. sorry, I didn't understand that part.

Hi Daniel, thank you for your interest. The vein dilates, meaning it expands in size. not just the inside. I hope that helps.

Hi Nasa, i have a question about the plasma. Both the storyboard show the plasma like a cell, or plasma cell but plasma in medical illustration is represented like a yellow fluid.

Hello Francesco, thank you for your interest. you are correct, plasma is fluid, the bloodstream has platelets, white blood cells, red blood cells, and various other metabolites, proteins, and biomolecular chemicals. Please use your best judgement to represent the images in your animation.

Hi! Is there any chance that we could get the vectorized file of the storyboards so we could make the animation as accurate as possible to the reference ? Thanks in advance
