Magento 1.9.0.1 backend not saving some changes (but works with IE and ipad !) PLEASE WAIT LOADER still run

all of the sudden (read i have changed nothing!) my magento installation stopped saving changes to the backed. for example i cannot save changes to my products (i.e. the price or the description), but can succesfully clone a product.
i keep getting the spinning "please wait message" and nothing happens.
HOWEVER ... it all works fine trhough Internet Explorer or Safari on ipad (not on Mac !). i have tried Chrome and firefox with no luck.
My installation is 1.9.0.1
