SEO domain advice required

We currently have one domain with 4 products and will shortly introduce a new product range (not related) to the first with another 4 products. The business owner would like to keep the product ranges separate if at all possible but doesn't want to undermine the SEO efforts.
We will have home page which is for the main website and from there they can select the product group they are interest in.

We are not sure which is the best structure to use:-
- subdomains
- sub directories
- separate domains
