WP Visual Composer : add overlay to background image

I am not able to figure out how to add a dark overlay to the posts in my post grid. I am using the Visual Composer post grid to show blog posts on my homepage ([login to view URL]). It's very hard to read the text over the photo, so I need to learn how to add the overlay.

If you know how to do this without editing the plugin that would be best. You will need to provide instructions on how I can do this in the future as well.
