Particle size effect on the transmitted x-ray beam intensity by tungsten oxide-epoxy composites.

The effect of particle size, filler loadings and x-ray tube voltage on the x-ray transmission in WO(3)-epoxy composites has been investigated using the mammography unit and a general radiography unit. Results indicate that nano-sized WO(3) has a better ability to attenuate the x-ray beam generated by lower tube voltages (25-35kV) when compared to micro-sized WO(3) of the same filler loading.

Mechanical properties of the brain-skull interface

Knowledge of the mechanical properties of the brain-skull interface is important for surgery simulation and injury biomechanics. These properties are known only to a limited extent. In this study we conducted in situ indentation of the sheep brain, and proposed to derive the macroscopic mechanical properties of the brain-skull interface from the results of these experiments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first ever analysis of this kind

The study sample comprised 360 individuals (equal sexes) and aged from birth to 25 years; a hold-out group comprising a further 50 individuals was used for model validation. Age estimation was performed through the visual comparison of the study radiographs against the atlas standards; statistical analyses were performed to assess the relationship between estimated skeletal and actual age. Prediction models were formulated; mean SEE values were ±0.005–0.90 (male) and ±0.25–0.421 years (female).
