NASA Contest: Robotic Systems User Interface Theme

  • Status: Closed
  • Prize: $1000
  • Entries Received: 22
  • Winner: BakiBak

Contest Brief

The goal of this challenge is to create a distinctive theme for the user interfaces for the current and future robots of NASA Johnson Space Center's Robotics Systems Technology Branch. The product should be inspired by the robots and the work they do, but should also be functional. The color scheme and elements produced for the UI will be used in computer-based applications that will be used for control and monitoring of these robots. An example of the types of elements to be stylized can be found at http://bootflat.github.io.

Background and pictures of the robots developed in this branch are attached. These robots are distinctive in their design- the style of the user interfaces used to control and monitor these robots should be as well.

Solution Requirements
• Backgrounds, artwork, and color schemes for robot user interface applications.
• Source File Requirements: All original vector source files of the submitted design. Files should be created in Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape and saved as layered AI or EPS files. Note that PSDs saved as EPS files are not true vector / scalable files and will not be accepted.
• All fonts (and operating systems) must be listed in a text file within your Submission Zip file. Include the name of the font and a link to where it can be downloaded or purchased. DO NOT include any font files in your submission or source files.
• Colors should be given in rgba format.
• Style sheet should be given in CSS format.
• Submission should also include a representative swatch of every element, color, and image. The NASA insignia or other NASA logos cannot be used as any part of the submission.
• A sample mock-up or wire-frame including key colors and elements is desired.

Other Preferences
• Color palette is open, but should be visually appealing on a computer screen.
• UI will be used indoors and outdoors, so color scheme(s) must be able to accommodate various lighting conditions.
• Color palette must include colors or effects to satisfy the following "states of being" of various UI elements
o For general elements (i.e., button):
• Enabled
• Disabled
• Selected
• Pressed / Clicked
• Hovered Over
• Important (should stand out from the rest)
• Next Action (draw user's attention from among several possible actions)
o For elements that represent an asynchronous remote data source or commanded element:
• Connected to remote agent
• Disconnected from remote agent
• Busy / Waiting on remote agent
• Remote agent is On / Activated
• Remote agent is Off / Deactivated
• Remote agent is OK
• Remote agent reports a Warning
• Remote agent reports an Error

• Accessibility for color blind users is desired.
• Required Elements to style include: buttons, checkboxes, radio buttons, toggle buttons, drop-downs, backgrounds, foregrounds, lists, typography/fonts, selections, panels, tables, spinners, labels/badges
• Optional Elements to style include: navigation bars, multi-selections, form elements, alerts/notifications, tabs, pills, pagination elements, breadcrumbs, progress bars, images, thumbnails, headers, and footers.

Stock Photography Requirements:
• Stock photography is not allowed in this contest, but NASA photography is permitted. All submitted elements must be designed solely by you.

Judging Criteria:
• Requirements: Does your submission meet the requirements as stated within the challenge?
• Quality: Does your submission look fresh, professional, and clean?
• Concept: Does your submission capture the distinctive look and design features of the robots introduced?

Please note that NASA employees/contractors are not eligible for competing in this contest.

Little late to the party. Would like to clarify: what contexts do you imagine this might be used? It seems like this is constrained to desktop; should we be considering mobile and AR/VR? I understand this is not a UX challenge as much as a visual look/feel/language challenge- but any nods on context can help. Also- a VR UX for robots challenge would be AWESOME!

In general, we're looking at desktops, but tablets are something that we're interested in, too. We agree with you on the VR UX challenge... maybe in the future!

Hello, as stated in one of your earlier comments

"Please realize that this contest is not to develop the user interface, but rather a graphic theme or template for the user interface displays. Read the brief for more."

It is not yet clear whether the final product shall be just a vector mockup of elements, or it shall also include a working HTML/CSS conversion of that mockup. That may also involve some JavaScript or other libraries for the effects used on elements. So please clarify what format of final submission is required.

    Hi,

I've developed an interactive GUI as a full integrated environment for analysis and design of special type of slabs. The GUI allows the user to draw, select drawn elements, assigning properties to these elements through windows forms and a lot of features. The programs is also, managing many sub-applications. My code is used OOP, Database, Windows forms importing and exporting files. I can show you my work if you r interested.
    Thank You

@NASA could you give an idea of "For elements that represent an asynchronous remote data source or commanded element:" is there an example you can point to were I can see this in action? not necessarily design, just an idea of what it is and how it fits into which ever eco system it's in, visually, thank you.

Imagine a mission where there is a robot on the Moon or Mars. It takes a fairly significant amount of time for commands to get from Mission Control to the robot and back. How would you design a user interface to show that an operator in Mission Control has sent a command, but it still waiting for feedback? How would you present responses from a robot that correspond to a command sent several minutes ago?

As such, we are working to clarify the brief (so watch for updates) and we are extending the contest deadline by 2 weeks. We look forward to your participation and ideas! Thanks.

We are looking for a general theme for UIs that we will develop in the future. We'd like to see the color scheme/artwork/fonts/details that you would design into the various elements that we've listed. We also went into some detail about states that the elements may need to communicate to the user.

No, we aren't looking for any specific GUI layouts, more general themes that can be used across UIs to make them look similar and distinctive.

This style sheet will support many apps, and these apps will support many robots. The apps will do different things, but most have elements that show data (telemetry, paths, camera views, etc.) and elements that issue commands (sliders, buttons, input fields, etc.). Hope this helps!

Hello, very interesting contest! I see that functions of the software are not defined, based on the style of the winning entry, to be used as guide styles, right?

Right. We hope to use these style guides for many types of UIs, but want a distinctive look to tie the different pieces of software together.
