Contest Brief

I am looking from someone who can provide me with a series of 6 illustrations for a short story.

Each illustration will feature a different part of the story.

Please read the following as it describes the "Old Man" in the story. (the full short story is attached if you want to know the character better)

The Old Man seemed the antithesis of Don in appearance and just about every other way possible. He looked to be in his late 60’s but was assuredly older than that. He was nattily dressed in a Brooks Brothers suit, complete with matching vest. His loosely curled silvery hair, although just above shoulder length was neatly worn, combed back from the forehead with locks flowing past both horns. His hands were almost ivory white with perfectly manicured nails that on each long finger, came to a cruel point.
In his left hand he held an ebony cane, gilt with gold inlay up and down its length and topped with a solid silver skull with luminous ruby red eyes, whose roundness fit neatly into his palm. In his right hand was a leather briefcase which, by the way it seemed to pull at his arm, obviously had some heft.

Once I choose a winner, I will have you complete all 6 illustrations for this story. I will pay $60 in total for all 6 completed illustrations.

If you enjoy the work, this may be an ongoing job for as long as you want it.

      I don't want to be stuck in any style. It's too bad to be stuck in any one style. It"s horrible. That's why you can't draw in new style. you can't do new style. people always love new things. This is the main problem.

    Hello artists. There is just under 2 days remaining in the contest. I truly appreciate the hard work from each of you and I have to say that the quality, creativity and originality of these entries is incredible. I have changed the rating for each entry to 3 stars so that they are all equal for the time being. If there are more entries then I will also rate each as 3 stars. If you would like to make any changes or revisions, make sure you do so before the contest ends. I know that I will have a difficult decision but I will make that decision within 48 hours from the end of the contest so no one has to wait too long. I know that my financial reward for this contest is not large and for that I apologize. One last thing - even if you do not win this contest, I may still contact you for future work, similar to this.     Answer to two questions below: I would prefer at least some colour if possible - at least some basic broad strokes as we see in entry #1, more if you can do it. I would like to have all illustrations the same size and shape if possible. I will be using these in a video and it will be easier for me if they are the same. BTW, if all goes well, I may need more illustrations in the future, the same as this, 6-7 per story, every week.

    Don's description is not clear in the story. He is about 30-40, unkempt long blond hair and an untidy beard. He is wearing jeans and a t-shirt with a hoodie and sneakers. He has been drunk for a long time and looks like a mess. he weighs about 80Kg and stands about 180cm. He'd be good looking if he took care of his appearance.

    1. Don, sleeping on a table in the corner of a bar. As in the story, we can see his hand holding on to a whiskey glass. Don’s description is in the story. (table and vague bar in background)

    2. The Old Man, as described in the story. (frontal view, vague bar in background)

    3. The Old Man standing beside Don, watching him sleep. (perspective is wide shot of bar from slightly above - we can see the stained ceiling and the clock on the wall.)

    I have now decided on what the 7 illustrations will be. Of course, one of the illustrations will be the one that you are using for this contest. This will be number 2 on the list. Please note that for most I will require some sort of background of the bar, even if it is pretty vague and shadowy for most of them. I simply want everyone to know what to expect if you win this contest.

    Those are my thoughts so far. There are still over 4 days to go and I will rank these in my order or preference when only 2 days remain. I hope to see evil and confidence in the character. I think he should be skinny as opposed to average or overweight. His face should be calm. The look should be sinister and cruel, but under the surface.

    It seems that most submissions are coming in as black and white sketches. There is nothing wrong with that but please don't think that you must do black and white. I would prefer colour although I know that my offer is not very high but it's up to you.

    In my mind, I see the Old Man as very distinguished, kind of like the guy who does the Dos Equis beer commercials. I have attached a couple of examples.

      A total of 6 illustrations. I'm afraid I haven't determined exactly what I want in each one (I may want a 7th) but the arrangement is for 6 and if I require one more I will pay for one more. The illustration of the Old Man will definitely be one of them though.

      Hello Maxwell. Thanks for the entry. I appreciate the simple realism and bold colour. In my mind, the Old Man looks older (like a distinguished, wealthy old man) and his horns are much smaller, maybe only 3 inches for so and higher up, behind the hairline. Please note that for the 6 illustrations I will need the background details from the story as well (the table, the bar). I know I didn't specify this so it's no strike against you - these notes are as much for everyone else as for you. All in all, very nice!

    I have attached a few samples of line drawings (B&W) in the style I think would work. I have also included some colour images in a similar style. Hopefully this will help you understand the look I'm going for.
