Contest Brief

I am looking for a Linux expert who can help me solve an issue with my Linux Lubuntu 16.04 system

Computer that has a touch screen and a custom serial connected circuit board that connects to a very specific piece of hardware.

The software running on the computer is Lubuntu 16.04 and is almost out of the box with no updates being performed on it. If updates are performed the kernel no longer works with proprietary hardware connected so it's very important any solutions work on Lubuntu 16.04 with no updates.

When the computer boots there is a USB hub connected to it that has a USB mic and USB speaker. These are not identified by the system. A program that autostarts on boot relies on these to be visible by the OS so that it can utilize them.

Since the OS doesn't recognize the USB devices we have to shut down the program, unplug/plug in the USB devices, then start the program again and it works as expected.

The goal of this contest is to provide a solution that will allow these USB devices to be seen by the OS on boot so the software doesn't require manual intervention to run as expected.

I’m expecting potential submissions that may simply say “try this solution” etc but since we can’t randomly test them all we would need a short explanation as to why this is happening and possible link to where this issue has been solved by using your solution.

If your solution is the one that solves the issue we are having and if there are multiple FL submissions with the same solution the person who had the submission first will be chosen as the winner.

We will evaluate your submission along with clear steps on how to solve this to know whether to try your solution out.

Skills and experience required:
- Proficiency in Linux Lubuntu 16.04
- Knowledge of USB device recognition issues
- Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose hardware compatibility problems
- Familiarity with Linux command line and system configurations

Thanks to all who participated in sending ideas. None of the ideas actually worked but entry #5 made my tech think of something that did work so we awarded the prize to #5 due to the input giving us the idea to test something else. It seems that the company that uses this Linux system may have turned off the audio in the audio in the boot up and that was preventing the system from seeing the usb mic and speakers.
