Java Applet - Serial Port Access

We have a proof of concept Java application based on JRE 1.6 that reads information from the client serial port. We converted it to an applet and launch it within an HTML page. The JFrame GUI appears, but the serial port class is returning NULL. We suspect there is some client restriction preventing us from accessing the serial port. We have compiled it to a jar and signed the jar, but still no luck. The serial driver being used is rxtxcomm.jar.
I'm looking for one of two solutions:
1. If someone can tell us what we need to do to make our existing applet work I'll gladly pay for this information
2. If you prefer to provide a working applet with all source code and documentation, I'll consider that as well. The applet should accept the serial port settings as parameters and place information read from the serial port in to a text box. The data is delimited by a CR/LF.
