Optimise php xml extraction script

I have an existing (working) php script that extracts data from xml files ( like News Articles ) into a database. There is 1 main xml file that contains a master list of the individual news files. Data is written to a mySql table. Each of the individual news xml files is read and data from various fields are extracted and written to another table. Time to complete this process is too long ( 59 news articles takes 57 seconds ). I need the code modified / optimised / or re-written to complete the task in around 5 seconds.
