This writing has two parts, first part is 2 to 3 pages writing and the second part is a 1 page writing. FIRST PART: Logic Have you ever heard someone say, "your candidate says that people are better off now than they were four years ago; that is just a fallacy". Well, no. It is not a fallacy. A fallacy is a mistake of logic. To assess our financial health now, versus some time in the past, we would be assessing facts. The facts may be wrong, but that says nothing of the logic of the argument. People routinely confuse the word "fallacy", or a mistake in logic, with a mistake of "fact". Logic is a matter of following certain rules or procedures. The substance, or content, is not at issue. It is not about facts. Rather, logic involves rules of reasoning. A paragraph should be a logical sort of thing. It should make sense. But it should also be free from any logical mistakes. So this is what I want you to do: Step One: Pick a topic from the newspaper. It can be anything. What is the key to peace in the middle east? Certain things about the global war on terror. questions like, why does Paris Hilton exist? Whatever you like. Step Two: Take a stand on that issue. What do you think? Step Three: Write a paragraph saying why you are right. Keep it simple, but write out briefly why your position on the issue makes sense. Step Four: Write a response to your position making as many logical mistakes as you can. Pick any logical mistakes you want from the Stephen's Guide. (Click on the link and go to the Stephen's Guide) There you will find an explanation of most of the major logical fallacies. Pick a bunch and use them. Make as many logical mistakes as you can. Write a paragraph that disagrees with your position that is just riddled with logical fallacies. The Stephen's Guide is the best, but if the site is down try one of these other Guides to logic: Nizcor Gallilean Step Five: Identify each mistake that you used in step four. Just write one or two sentences telling me what mistakes you used and how you used them. EXPECTATIONS: Write about two to three pages SECOND PART Well, at this point, I am getting pretty darn tired of hearing you complain about work. But, I asked for it! Last time. I now want you to take those random sentences you wrote and weave them into a narrative. Expectations Write a one page paper explaining this problem carefully. Make sure to see how the sentences you wrote last time are blend together into a clear narrative this time. Please hand this in by the end of this module.
