First you want to see if your existing thermostat is the older style mercury type or newer style digital. To check, pull the front cover off of the thermostat and if you see a small glass bulb with a silver liquid, than it is the mercury type. If there is no bulb than your thermostat should be fairly new. If you do have a mercury thermostat I would suggest you purchase and install a new digital model, you can decide if a programmable or non-programmable type is what will fit your need. Most mercury type models are inaccurate, just by replacing an existing mercury thermostat with a basic, newer model will save you money. To dispose of a mercury thermostat contact your town or county to see what the procedure for disposing of it would be, never throw it in the regular trash. Your options with a new thermostat are programmable and non-programmable. If your daily schedule is not set and you come and go often, then the non-programmable model will work just fine. When you step out for more than several hours set the thermostat up or down, depending on the season, but do so by only several degrees.
