Need to know the format you want, xml, json or other you need for the windows program, the parameters list and functionalities and logic of the whole system. I will use REST as it's supported by most of the program language and it's very simple to manage.

please note: AWS doesn't make it any special. the actual cost may depend on the number of tables, queries. so its good if you can give some idea about them.

I've got rich experience working with different LAMP-applications, running on AWS or not, doesn't really matter (but yes, I have done a lot of projects on AWS and have my own Ubuntu instance running there). So, I offer to use PHP as a layer between your application and MySQL, I don't know reasons why shouldn't you try this way. How big and complex will be your database? Thanks, Alex

Hi First of all I'm really shocked regarding the project budget. I guess you're not fully aware of how AWS works. It's quite easy to configure MySQL so that it's not publicly accessible and is only accessed by the web-server instead. So here's how I'll do this. 1. Configure a AWS RDS Instance with MySQL and configure it's security group to be accessed only by the EC2 instance where the web-server resides, & its security group will allow 3306. It's that easy and simple. Overall project fees will be 30 USD. :) Lemme know if you've any doubt or if I'm missing some crucial point. Hello. So you basically just need to be able to send http requests from your software to a PHP page that is available likely using some kind of authentication, then have the PHP do the database query? I would likely use REST as I believe fewer layers and simplicity results in better performance. I am just finishing up an API to connect a Sagemath server via PHP webservice on an AWS server at the moment. Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you.

Hi there ! So you want to create a desktop application that will use data from remote server right ? Web services is for sure good solution as it works from behind firewalls so you will have no trouble accessing it from any environment. You want the web services to be written in PHP and access MySQL - no problem . I've done it many times. The question is : are you looking for generic webservice - one that you will just send an sql query and as results get raw query results ? Or do you need an API . Of course more sens makes to make an API webservice so i.e. you call : [POST]->order with user_id=3, quantity=3, product_id=10 and API crates entry in database . Do you already know how many API endpoints you need ? I mean what kind of operations you need. Or you don't have it planned yet ? Anyway I can help you in whatever you need . It also depends for how many users are you planning this applicaiton for. 10/100/1000/100000 at one time ? Currently everybody is talking about REST or RESTish type of webservices so I would go with it, but actually there is no golden way - it's just the way that works ... I prefer returning JSON results if possible, XML if necessary ... it all depends on the job really . One thing I can assure you - if you pick me I will assist you with all my 'powers' :) .
