Learning/Assessment Task 3: Individual Assignment ‘Strategic Management Report’
The popularity of the Sunshine Coast as tourist destination is growing and so is the growth in hospitality and tourism industry. ‘ABC Hotel’, a hypothetical company, started its operation in Caloundra in late 1990s. It provides accommodation and food services to its customers. The hotel employs nearly 100 people and has demonstrated a satisfactory level of performance so far - 2007 performance being an exception with better than industry average. David Jones, the Managing Director of the hotel is responsible for planning and management of hotel operations and is intending to expand the hotel capacity further.
David, however, has been extremely busy over the years and had little or no time for proper planning. Therefore, he hired Rebecca McNeal to assist him in the planning and management of hotel operations and work on the planning aspect of hotel capacity expansion after going through a rigorous selection process including psychometric testing, a formal presentation, interview and group discussion in September 2007. Although David does not have formal qualifications he recognised the importance of management education. He was pleased to note that Rebecca had received her MBA qualification from the University of the Queensland. Strategic Management was one of her favourite courses during her postgraduate studies. Her studies had reinforced her knowledge of the business environment and she was impressed with the contemporary views of management such as Total Quality Management, Six –Sigma, and Business Process Re-engineering. She recognised the importance of benchmarking, employee training, employee empowerment and continuous process improvement in improving business performance and achieving competitive advantage. Rebecca has indicated her commitment in integrating these viewpoints in the hotel’s business strategy.
