Follow the Corporate Leader?
Why should we?
I just finished reading an article on the Top 100 Corporate Criminals in America. The list included names you may have heard…Chevron, Bristol-Myers, Tyson Foods, Southland Corporation, Borden, Georgia Pacific, Royal Caribbean Cruises, General Electric, Pfizer, Inc and more. Lately, added many more to the list, top dogs from companies like Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, Enron, Bears Stearns, and guys like Bernie Madoff. These mammoth corporations were fined hundreds of millions of dollars for corporate crimes ranging from Environmental crimes to illegal campaign financing, breaking antitrust laws, fraud and public corruption. Unisys was even fined for bribery. Others will surely see jail time.
They’d better.
Where is the gallant leadership we crave? Where’s the Braveheart of the Business World? Where are the Corporate Champions that inspire their troops to “take that hill” and lead the charge? All we ever seem to hear about is moguls gone mad and tycoons turned convicts.
In an article on corporate leadership put out by The Herman Group, Roger Herman wrote, “Sometimes outstanding leaders appear, but in too many situations there is a serious shortage of leaders at all levels. Employees in many organizations are looking for strong leadership, and not finding it. They ask themselves more frequently these days whether they want to continue following the leaders they have now. Without confidence in their leaders, people do not perform to their highest potential and often wonder if they should be working somewhere else.”
Listen up: EVERY PERSON with influence over any other person is in a position of leadership. Regardless of age, gender or race, EVERYBODY can lead by example, wisdom, courage and integrity. People actually desire to be led and even be told what to do, where to go, etc. We can lead them justly or unjustly.
Adolph Hitler was one of the world’s greatest leaders. Mind you, despite being one of the greatest – he wasn’t a GOOD leader at all. There’s a difference. Jesus, on the other hand, formed a global organization that has lasted over 2000 years, even turning His greatest liability into His greatest assets (Saul of Tarsus – whom we know as the Apostle Paul – writer of much of the New Testament)....
