I have never done any database work before so need advice on what database to use (SQL, MySQL, Access, something else?), how to structure the data to get the information I desire, how to effectively query the data (Access, Excel, something else?), where to store the data (offsite, on laptop, etc.). =>Access database is more efficient because all the tables ,forms, macros ,reports ,queries are in single file. Whether to use Microsoft Access, Excel or MySQL/SQL Server depends on the no of users being using the database at any moment. For example if its single user you can use Excel or Microsoft Access. If its between 3 to 5 users Microsoft Access will be OK. But for more than 5 users con-currently one has to go with backend Server database like MySQL or MS SQL Server . 3. Must be able to add additional/new data to database while eliminating duplicates existing in the new data. =>Yes ,what additional data to be add? How much data you want to add over the period ? for large data even though you are planning to use single user, it is better to use Server database like MySQL or MS SQL Server which are more reliable. 4. hi Choosing database can be really confusing in the beginning. Functionality wise, MS SQL is the best. You've got support, stability, robustness and it is widely used. However, it is expensive. Express edition is free. MS SQL database need Windows based servers and hosting charges for Windows based server are higher than Linux servers. Another widespread technology when it comes to database is MySQL. It is Open source and easily available with good support but has some stability issues. MySQL database run on Linux servers and hence the hosting is cheap too. Query 1 Access are widespread but are ideal for small businesses. It won't scale after a certain limit. So, if the database exceeds a certain limit (most probably 2GB. Some research is needed here.), then you'll have to migrate to other database technology. Also, it also depends on for what website you want the database. Asp.net websites go with MS SQL or Access database. PHP website go with MySQL database. Query 2 Data is stored in form of tables in database. So, as per your needs, data can be extracted. Normalisation techniques are applied during database design so that redundant data is not there. Query 3 If the database is linked to a website, database needs to be up and running 24x7. You need to host it on a server. If it's just for some local application, then you can have it on your laptop. Make sure to take backup from time to time. Don't have characters left. Contact me for other queries. Thank You
