Hi,
I need to write a "Why is writing hard?" essay.
Here is a quote that most of us can agree with:
Writing is hard work. A clear sentence is no accident. Very few sentences come out right the first time, or even the third time. Remember this as consolation in moments of despair. If writing seems hard, that's because it is hard. It's one of the hardest things people do. (From William Zinsser, On Writing Well.)
Why do you think writing is such hard work? Give some reasons that explain what makes writing so difficult for you personally – or, if you prefer, for writers in general. You should support your explanation with concrete and descriptive details, drawn from your own writing experiences and/or those of others (including professionals).
Suggestions:
* Think in detail about how you approach essays. What do you actually do when you prepare for writing, when you sit down to draft, when you revise? How do you feel when you've handed the paper in? What conclusions can you draw from an analysis of your process about what makes writing hard for you?
* Compare different writing tasks (letters to friends or employers, email, diaries, essays etc.) Which is hard? Are they hard in different ways? What makes one piece of writing easy and another challenging? What conclusions can you draw from this?
* If you have read any writers' discussions of the business of writing (Stephen King, William Zinsser etc.) discuss what these tell you about its difficulty.
Format:
* About 1000 words (3-5 pages)
* 1” margin, double-spaced, 12 point font, Word 97-2003 preferred (but I can do .docx)
Guidelines:
* a solid sense of structure, focusing on a single point;
* ideas developed in plenty of concrete detail;
* a sense of organization (i.e., an ability to discuss one thing at a time);
* evidence of a meaningful essay process (i.e., the ability to get ideas, come up with details, consider alternative organizations, and choose the right one);
* clear, error-free sentences;
* a sense of appropriate voice and vocabulary.
Thank you
