multi column menu dropdown - Magento

the dropdown menus are too long because they have many sub categories. I was wondering if you can make the dropdown 2 or 3 columns instead of the 1 column that it is now. maybe a column can only have 15 maximum, then the next in the list would go to the 2nd column. instead of the subcategories in the dropdown only being 1 colum and really long, can we make them show in 2 or 3 columns? so it does not go all the way down past the bottom of the page?
