**Purpose
**The goal is to protect email applications running on the local machine from malicious email over the SMTP and POP3 protocols. We need to build a filter with the goal of scanning and blocking potentially malicious email traffic over the SMTP and the POP3 protocol on the local machine.
**Features & Functionality**
**1-** Scan for POP3 and SMTP mail packets
**2-** Call into an API of an already developed AV engine and provide full packet info.
**3-** Based on AV engine response, determine whether to block the packet or allow it to continue up the stack.
**4-** Filter must be able to communicate with user-mode applications.
**5-** Filter must run all the time, or run anytime an application attempts to read SMTP or POP3 email.
**6-** Filter must have some configuration mechanism.
**7-** Must be fully tested on all windows platforms from win9x through WinXP
**Additional Requirements
1-** There will be 3 monthly milestones with bi-weekly checkpoints.
**2-** The deliverables for each milestone will be determined before project start.
**3-** I will provide a Subversion source control server against which you will need to do your daily checkins.
**4-** Winning bidder will need to be on this project fulltime and must give this project top priority.
**5-** Winning bidder must have demonstarted ability and proven track record writing NDIS driver level code as well as winsock-level filters, with extensive understanding and experience in network programming at the ip stack level.
**6-** All bidders must provide an implementation recommendation for whether to build this at the winsock layer or at the NDIS driver level, and provide a break down of the pros and cons of each approach.
