Magento - Need simple Function to Change Product Type

I need a PHP developer intimately familiar with Magento and Magento my SQL database. I need a simple function created, no user interfaces needed since it can simply be added as a pulldown option on the Manage Products screen. "Table is catalog_product_entity and its easy to change the type". I thought I read this somewhere two months ago also, possibly the same forum post. I cannot believe no one has turned this into an extension. My only worry is that it is not as easy as these comments imply. But if you are intimately familiar with Magento you should already know the answer to this? I am looking for bids on providing me this function or bit of code that I can add to [login to view URL] to obtain the extra pulldown menu entry.
