fix compatability between mssql 2008 r2 and php 5.3.10

i have a php script that used to connect up to mssql 2008 and pull data from a database. we upgraded the DB to 2008 r2 and the php script stopped working. i have narrowed down the problem to being something with our version of php and the version of mssql that is running on the server. php 5.3.10 is being run on a linux server, the mssql db is on a different server, most likely on windows. i dont know the odbc driver is out of date or not.
