Voip Telephony: project is to do configuration to set up a voip telephony system for multiple sites, the main line using the internet and the back up line using the PSTN whereas if there is a failover happens in main line communication should happen using the backup line, the methodology that could be used to analyse voip traffic, testing strategies and the performance monitoring using the backend tool. ## Deliverables **Background:** The usage of internet has become more popular in everyday life in the modern world and loads of applications have been introduced in it, the demand of the introduction of the application. In Telecommunication the demand has increased for the use of Voip Telephony over the normal PSTN, whereas it is more flexible and cost effective. In Voip the transmission of data and voice are carried through a single network. In mid of 1970’s the internet telephony experiments was conducted for the first time which had resulted in internet protocol specification. **Aim:** Voip Technology has become the most efficient and key topic in today’s world in all the Small, medium, and Large enterprises, it has become more efficient in use since it has more features than a normal PSTN and the cost could be affordable for such a magnificent features, In the project the aim is to design a voip telephony system for multiple sites and with the backup of PSTN to avoid the interruption of communication if a failover happens. **Objectives:** The main objectives that has to carries over are Ø Voip Telephony: for medium sized industry Ø Specifications according o the firm which has multiple sites Ø Assuming connection with a dedicated line: Voip Ø Backup line over PSTN Ø Choosing best cost effective method for line connection and more secured one Ø Testing methods to check the connection- investigation Ø If failure happens then the backup should be automatically used to avoid interruption ??" what methods would be used to do it- approach Ø Analyse voip traffic. Ø Testing Strategy for the network Ø Monitoring the performance of the network using a back end tool. Ø Comparison between the pots and Voip- why Voip? For the project the network is build for a small or medium sized industry to support multiple sites implementation of voip telephony systems. The network is build with the main connection using the WAN and the backup line with normal PSTN using ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) to the voip provider. Also soft phones can be considered in addition. Whereas if there is a breakage in the Wan and failure happens the communication would still happen using the PSTN. Whereas when the ip phone from one site when dialing the other end the DID (Direct Inward Dialing) converts it to a normal number to reach destination via PSTN. In order to bring up a proper voip network the various elements and gateways required are first identified to be placed in the network. · VOIP phones grouped and connected to a switch which is in turn connected with a CME (Call Manager Express) via internet. · Landlines need to be grouped and interfaced using ATAs and voice gateways to be connected with the LAN or Ethernet and then forwarded to the same application server, may be used as backup lines for the voip phones to ensure fault tolerance in the network. · Soft phones on the computers in the firm could also be used of the sites which could be connected to server. **3rd Party Application Server: (CME: Call Manager Express)** It is a server developed on the basis of the firm’s personal requirements for special services like caller identification, billing units, call rejection and acceptance criteria etc. It is solely designed for the firm’s own use and needs and it reduces the need for storing special information on the machine itself. The 3rd party application server is then connected to the SIP global long distance network via a firewall which secures the network. The SIP long distance network is a collection of CISCO proxy servers which are used for voip telephony system. On the other side the SIP needs to be interfaced with the available PSTN service providers via voice gateways and network gateways. **Why voip?** The use of internet being larger and also the digitization of the voice signals in the voip system make it desirable over the conventional system. Also digitization and packetisation ensures better call quality and lower signal to noise ratio. Also in a digitised set up additional features can be featured using servers and other applications solely intended for desired set of purposes which is not present in POTs. Based on the identified component set up for the network we need to · Install the infrastructure solution · Configure the voip infrastructure solution · And also maintain and troubleshoot it **Monitoring:** Once the network is fully set up then the network could be checked by various testing methodology to make sure the connectivity is proper and working appropriately as expected. And a backend tool Namely VQ Manager could also be used to monitor the network and to record the information or reports of all the functions that are progressing while the communication within the network takes place.
