This essay is due on Dec.14th!!! This is an undergraduate college level essay, so the words don't have to be fancy! Paper should be a tightly argued 5-6 page essay. Draw from the readings to add to your argument, and sharpen and clarify your points. While focusing attention on specific designers, films, images, and projects you should aim to situate the examples you choose in their larger socio-political and cultural contexts. Make provocative juxtapositions and in your analysis explain how those juxtapositions reveal meaning. Chose ONE of the following topics and use the questions posed to think through and work up your essay. 1. Jameson's "Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of Late Capital" Offer your own close reading and critique of Jameson’s essay. How does he structure his essay; where does he start out and where does he end up? Identify and unpack his terminology and sub-categories. What does he mean by “late capitalism?” What does he mean by postmodernism as “cultural dominant” as opposed to “stylistic description?” Offer your own interpretations of “the waning of affect,” “pastiche,” “the nostalgia mode,” “the loss of a radical past,” and “the hysterical sublime.” Is his application of these concepts to John Portman’s Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles accurate? Can we apply them to some of Philip Johnson’s mirrored skyscrapers of the 1970s? What does Jameson mean when he says, toward the end of the essay, that we must now “make at least some effort to think the cultural evolution of late capitalism dialectically, as catastrophe and progress all together?” You may also want to make use of Reinhold Martin's essay "Mirrors" from his book Utopia's Ghosts in discussing Philip Johnson's skyscrapers of the 1970s as they relate to Jameson's theory of postmodernism. 2. Technology and Politics in the 1980s: "Reaganite Entertainment" Choose two films from the early and mid 1980s and analyze them in terms of their representation of technology and technology's relationship to politics. Films you may want to consider include: E.T. (1982), Tron (1982), WarGames (1983), The Last Starfighter (1984), Cloak & Dagger (1984). In what ways do their representation of technology differ from films of the 1970s such as The Parallax View (1974) and Three Days of the Condor (1975)? You may also want to analyze them in terms of mise-en-scene, gender and sexuality, and characterization. Since it's only 5-6 pages, you don't have to cover everything in the descriptions and questions but a good part of them. Relevant articles mentioned in the description is in the attachment!
