Fix Magento indexing issue (small project)

We currently have a Magento Community edition 1.4.2.0 store, we're facing issues with "Index product and categories URL rewrites" , it is stuck in processing and doesn't finish even if done through command line or cron jobs. Now when we import any new item to site and it didn't show up at frontend I need someone to fix this problem. Open to suggestions. The help thread (the link above) suggests modifying the database or even using the database repair tool with a clean version of Magento. i've change the project size to smaller one because its only have 500 products in single website.
