I have a degree in food science and nutrition. I believe i can contribute in this project.
Here is a sample of my work:
“Oh my!! What is that smell? John, did you have garlic?!” The next thing that comes is a burst of laughter from John’s peers. Despite this, John, being the optimistic John sees it as a way to entertain his friends, and even try to share his new special “breath” with some of his buddies. I think we are all quite familiar with this scenario. Many people find the smell of raw garlic is just too unbearable, but little do we know that, it is this “smelliness” that makes garlic one of the best natural food medicine in the world.
One of the well know health properties of garlic is that it has high antibiotic value. The key component that equips garlic with antimicrobial properties is Alicin, which is also the one that helps chase out Mr. Dracula from disturbing our sleep. Most of us are aware that one should not resort to antibiotic whenever there’s some discomfort or illness for a long time, as the new batch of pathogens gets more resistant to the antibiotics, thus a stronger dosage is required next time. Garlic undeniably also kills germs, but research has shown that it is actually more potent than well-known antibacterial drugs like penicillin and tetracycline. More than hundreds of studies have shown that garlic is capable of dealing with a long list of disease spreading microbes such as botulism, typhoid, tuberculosis and others.
More and more medical journals are showing that garlic helps in cardiovascular health. It does so by lowering blood cholesterol levels and causes some changes in the blood that helps to protect the heart, such as preventing blood clotting in the arteries and thinning of blood. Garlic’s effect on the individual’s cardiovascular health had been shown to be better than conventional drugs. It reduces more cholesterol than the conventional cholesterol-lowering drug, Clofibrate. Ajoene, a natural chemical compound found in garlic, is just as effective as Aspirin in interfering the blood clotting process in humans. Again, garlic has shown that mother- nature still contains the best things for life.
Other than that, garlic has shown to reduce the risk of getting any forms of cancer. In laboratory studies, scientist injected tumour cells into mice, and then fed them with raw garlic extract. After a few weeks, the cancer cells in mice were completely wiped out. Garlic has shown to have better antioxidative properties than Vitamin E, a type of supplement which is commonly used for preventing cancer. Food Scientists had shown that it is the sulphur compounds in garlic that helps in preventing the body from creating more carcinogens from chemicals, thus helps in preventing cancer.
The health benefits listed above are just the tip of the iceberg. Other health properties include antihypertensive, immunity boosting, lung protection and many more. Garlic has been a part of some civilizations for a long time, yet it has never failed to show its wonders in health and in many ways still better than many conventional drugs, which were only produced less than a century ago. As there is an old welsh saying: “Eat leeks in March and wild garlic in May, and all year after physicians may play.” Whenever you have a cold or a mild flu, just a few bulb of raw garlic will do the trick. Finally, be like John.
