I have already worked on very similar hardware, I.e. two Nucleo boards sending raw CAN messages. I assume you don't care about having a full CAN stack, and only care about sending raw CAN messages using the CAN peripheral. I can deliver a bare bone Atollic / STM32-Cube IDE project which configures the MCU and CAN peripheral, with a simple demo consisting of one boarding periodically sending a test message, and the second board receiving it. I can incorporate the STM32Cube code generated structure, or a more clean structure which makes it easier to understand (but still using the HAL Libraries). I can also use FreeRTOS, which I always recommend using anyways. Let me know if you have any questions.
