Alabama Prison/humanitarian crisis

The Alabama Department of Corrections was sued by the DOJ in 2019 for inhumane treatment and living conditions, excessive violence by officers, inadequate mental health treatment and proper healthcare, insufficient staffing, amongst a host of other things. Since that lawsuit the death toll has risen significantly, staffing has severely decreased leaving no oversight and causing a huge security risk for those incarcerated and officers. The men/women of the ADOC have no hope. The parole system is broken the men/women incarcerated that are eligible, and meet all the criteria for parole, are being denied parole. The ADOC is in violation of these men/women's 1st, 8th, 13th, and 14th amendment rights. We have a grassroots organization "Both Sides of the Wall'.  "Both Sides of the Wall is a grassroots organization that is committed to changing the criminal justice system through sharing the stories of impacted families, advocating for policies that create better outcomes for those incarcerated as well as loved ones on the outside, and by developing support networks for those directly impacted inside and outside the walls. Our organization focuses on prison reform, restorative justice, participatory defense, reentry, effective programing, and parole as priorities to address the ongoing crisis in Alabama’s prisons which leaders continue to neglect. We fight in unity with the incarcerated citizens and the community to change laws that allow incarcerated citizens to be properly rehabilitated through effective best practices and programs that will help loved ones as they transition incarcerated citizens back into society." We are in need of assistance to continue our efforts in helping the incarcerated men/women through emergency strike funds, filing court motions, protest/rallies, phone calls, basic necessities, and helping with the children and families of those incarcerated.
