I work with big data (100 million+) rows daily from multiple db back-ends, including SQL server. A lot of time goes into optimizing the dashboards so that the queries they send to the back-end have fast execution times. I prefer working with Tableau over Power BI since Tableau is more flexible especially when it comes to creating fully automated reports / dashboards. If done correctly, the finished reports should connect directly to the back-end db and update automatically as more data gets loaded. Alternatively, if back-end queries are taking too long and report performance is inadequate, the data can be extracted into a tde file (optimized tableau data extract) or into a cube. TDE files offer more flexibility since they work with parameters, whereas cubes do not work with parameters but often produce the fastest performance times for extremely large datasets.
