We have a client who fixes PCs, reinstalls operating systems etc. Their bandwidth is often used by multiple computers downloading large amounts of updates from microsoft. They want to set up a WSUS server so they download the updates once then distribute them inside their lan.
As an example - reinstalling Windows XP SP3 on a PC then requires over 140 updates (over 150Mb of files) from microsoft. The client wants to be able to point the PC doing the updates at the WSUS server and let the WSUS server provide the updates.
The client can control DNS / router tables etc to redirect traffic if required to get MS updates haeding to the WASUS server and not to microsofts site.
Deliverables:
a) WSUS set up on a 2003 SBS virtual machine (SBS 2003 already installed).
b) Clear written details of what is required to get the client machine updating from the WSUS server.
c) Clear written details of what is required to make sure the WSUS server is updating from Microsoft.
Other information:
Server machine - 1CPU, SBS 2003 running under VMWare / VMServer.
IP Address on lan: [login to view URL]
Gateway: [login to view URL]
DNS - Served by Gateway but internal DNS can be served by WSUS server if required.
DHCP -Normally turned off - all client machines will have their IP address setup configured by hand
If DHCP or other services are required to be on for WSUS then we can arrange for that.
Set up is via RDP onto the server.
Any other questions - just ask.
If you have alternative suggestions or another method, let me know. Suggestions welcome.

Hi, sorry for the delayed response. We had unexpected building work that stopped us getting to emails regularly for the last week. Several people have asked about the domain status and AD status for the project. The client has no Active Directory or domain running. They are a PC repair specialist and rather than have 20-50 machines collect updates every week they want to uintercept the update requests and use a WSUS server if possible. Putting the PCs / Laptops they are fixing in an Active Directory or Domain or under group policy is not possible / feasible as they are not all professional OS series but may be Home OS as well. Also the Pcs need to be used by home users after leaving the office / repair shopand messing with security by adding them to a domain is not an option. The client has a highly configurable firewall that can reroute requests to Microsoft to other places if required. They can control all network traffic as required. They can create / run scripts to run on machines and hand set ipsettings as required. Let me knowif this changes any of your bids or thoughts. I'll be choosing a worker 4-5 days from now. Thanks shane
