I am both a freelance writer/editor (although not usually of books) and a book publicist. You are absolutely correct not to choose the self-publishing option. In the end, you will spend more money and mostly receive nothing but a garage full of books you can't even convince your family to take. Publishing a book is a huge gamble either way, but at least you will know you did everything the professional way in the end. Bookstores, for the most part, won't allow self-published books on the shelves. Even many libraries shun them as donations. You do need good editing and someone who isn't afraid to tell you what's good and bad about the story before you try to shop it to agents (Yes, use an agent.). Hopefully, that agent will be rough on you too. I am not usually involved at that stage, but I do know people who can recommend good agents. I can start reading and editing tomorrow. Notes will come every day I read and edit. A final report will be given.
