He majored in linguistics and media studies in his Bachelor of Arts degree at Auckland University, and following that, gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Speech Science). He has presented at conferences on various topics in the field of linguistics, where his interests include Austronesian languages, acoustic phonetics, formal syntax, language documentation, lexicography, and historical English linguistics. He was a tutor at Auckland University for the topic English Language to 1900, teaching four tutorial streams a week. He attended a course in improvised theatre which included presentation skills.
