I am a British national, currently a tax resident in Canada, but previously working in the US. Whilst I was in the US I was awarded (and paid for) some shares in the company I work for (not publicly listed and with headquarters in the UK). There were 2 separate share issuances in 2017 and 2018. Once I received the shares, I filed an 83b election and pre-emptively paid tax in the US on the value of the shares as determined by BDO at the time of share issuance. After I moved to Canada, the company had a private equity investment and shareholders received a payout in € Euros in 2021, whilst maintaining shares in a different parent company. Having already paid tax on the shares in the US, should I file a US tax return for 2021?
